2012 : Year of the Galactic New Moon (2012 : The Pagan Perspective)

2012 : The Pagan Perspective.

Several schools of thought along with various cultures from around the planet are pointing to this current time as a great turning point for Mother Earth and all of humanity. Christians as well as the Jewish and Islamic faiths all see the coming years as a literal cleansing period. The Hopi Indians of North America say we are entering the Fifth World, but not before we pass through a 'Great Purification'. The Incas believe the world will be turned upside down in 2012, and the infamous Mayan Calendar (otherwise known as the Mayan Long Count or Great Cycle) ends on the December Solstice 2012, signifying the end of time as we know it.

Also on this landmark day, the solstice sun will align with the Dark Rift of our very own Milky Way Galaxy. This cosmic center-point is also known as 'The Great Womb of our Galactic Mother', and on December 21st 2012, the plane of our solar system will line up exactly with the plane of our galaxy - a cycle that has taken 26,000 years to complete.

*Note : The dates shown above are for the Southern Hemisphere.

So what could this all possibly mean to us Pagans? One thing all Pagans honour, respect and celebrate are the never-ending cycles of Mother Nature. We have our 'Wheel Of The Year' in which we observe eight ritual Sabbats (four major and four minor). The cycles of the moon - the Esbats - are celebrated on the thirteen full and new moons of the year. In neo-paganism and Wicca today, we even perceive the Goddess as being three-fold : a Triple Goddess having three faces - Maiden, Mother and Crone, each echoing the various phases (or faces) of the Moon. Cycles within cycles within cycles...

The ancient Maya were like magickal Shamans or Witchdoctors themselves, recognising not only the cycles of our Moon, Sun and planetary neighbours, but of whole star clusters like the Pleiades (The Tzolkin is the sacred calendar of the Maya and is based on the celestial cycles of the Pleiades).

The Mayans held the dark Central Bulge of our galaxy in high regard and in deep reverence, going so far as to predict a time of massive change and new beginnings when our solstice sun aligns with this mysterious dark womb in 2012.

As Above, So Below. Pagans intrinsically resonate with these cosmic energy cycles. We have our own personal versions of this every time we perform banishing rituals or spells during the New Moon (alternatively known as the Dark Moon). This is the best time for sending away or removing any undesired energy, habit, situation or thing; a time for honouring secrets, silence or solitude; a time for initiating and starting new projects. This Dark Disk phase also symbolises the veil between death and rebirth; a powerful time for working personal magick and ushering in new, higher vibrations.

2012 is like working with a galactic New Moon; an opportunity for the collective (all of humanity) to rebirth itself; a chance to work some major magick and banish our old, out-moded ways. It's a time to step into a new paradigm, vibrate at a new frequency and create a new world.

The Mayans of old are reaching forward through time to the Pagans/Wiccans/Witches/Magicians of the Now Age - creating a bridge of Light across the space-time continuum. We know each other intimately (and share some similarities - have we both not been accused in our pasts of performing human and animal sacrifices all in the name of appeasing one 'god' or another?). What they understood cosmologically, we Pagans understand personally. 2012 might just be the year the microcosm and the macrocosm finally merge (and science and mysticism converge); of all humans being expressions of the Divine GOD/DESS; the culmination of eons-long cycles; and of a grand global awakening. 2012 marks the transitional phase between Galactic Grandmother Crone and YOUniversal Virgin.

The End is nigh? No. More like...The Beginning is nigh!

"Our life is an apprenticeship to the truth that around every circle another can be drawn; that there is no end in nature, but every end is a beginning."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson.
