Before the era of GPS, Sonar, Radar, and satellites, da Vinci said the easiest way to see in which direction you were traveling was by watching the stars.

Set your course to a star and you shall navigate any storm.

These words were meant literally. I'd like to give them a much deeper meaning.

Put you goals above yourself like a star and use them as a direction in which to travel but not as something to be reached.

If you have reached your goal, you have probably placed it to low and you have nothing more to which to aspire. More than that, you have no more direction. Success is not measured by the goals you have reached but by the distance you have traveled in order to reach them. By the same denomination, failure is not the sum of goals that have not been reached. Failure is not having these goals in the first place. Success is finding the right road to follow. Do not be afraid of not realizing your aspirations. If you have found the road that leads you there, you have already attained success. Remember the words:

If you try, you might. If you don't, you won't.

Many people have asked me how to find the right road. Where can I get a "life-compass" to show me in which direction to turn? My answer is simple.

When you get there, you will know.
I know, because I am there.

I used to be a machine-operator in a factory. I knew it was not taking me anywhere, or not at least, to places I wanted to be. I needed people around me, but more than that, I needed people who needed me. I worked the machines because I needed an income but in the evenings, I tried to "sell my wares" to whoever was prepared to listen. I remember going to the foreman one day, asking him if I might please get off work a little earlier. A small group of friends wanted me to come and give them a short talk that evening and I had to get home first to change my overalls. Also, this lecture will keep me out till late. "Maybe, I could come in a little later tomorrow?"
I had opened a door and was told very politely that they won't be needing my services any more. With no apprehension, I shook the foreman's hand and thanked him for the golden opportunity that he had just given me to go my own way.

I was once asked what my wish would be if I had one granted by a genie. My answer was: "to work because I wanted to, not because I had to". The first part has already been granted. I now work because I want to. I love what I do. Now my goal is to fulfill the second part, to reach the point where I won't have to.
