Aug. 13, 2009 -- An enormous system of caves, chambers and tunnels lies hidden beneath the Pyramids of Giza, according to a British explorer who claims to have found the lost underworld of the pharaohs.

Populated by bats and venomous spiders, the underground complex was found in the limestone bedrock beneath the pyramid field at Giza.

"There is untouched archaeology down there, as well as a delicate ecosystem that includes colonies of bats and a species of spider which we have tentatively identified as the white widow," British explorer Andrew Collins said.

Collins, who will detail his findings in the book "Beneath the Pyramids" to be published in September, tracked down the entrance to the mysterious underworld after reading the forgotten memoirs of a 19th century diplomat and explorer.

"In his memoirs, British consul general Henry Salt recounts how he investigated an underground system of 'catacombs' at Giza in 1817 in the company of Italian explorer Giovanni Caviglia," Collins said.

The document records that the two explored the caves for a distance of "several hundred yards," coming upon four large chambers from which stretched further cave passageways.

With the help of British Egyptologist Nigel Skinner-Simpson, Collins reconstructed Salt's exploration on the plateau, eventually locating the entrance to the lost catacombs in an apparently unrecorded tomb west of the Great Pyramid.

Indeed, the tomb featured a crack in the rock, which led into a massive natural cave.

"We explored the caves before the air became too thin to continue. They are highly dangerous, with unseen pits and hollows, colonies of bats and venomous spiders," said Collins.

According to Collins, the caves -- which are tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years old -- may have both inspired the development of the pyramid field and the ancient Egyptian's belief in an underworld.

"Ancient funerary texts clearly allude to the existence of a subterranean world in the vicinity of the Giza pyramids," Collins told Discovery News.

Indeed, Giza was known anciently as Rostau, meaning the "mouth of the passages."

This is the same name as a region of the ancient Egyptian underworld known as the Duat.

"The 'mouth of the passages' is unquestionably a reference to the entrance to a subterranean cave world, one long rumored to exist beneath the plateau," Collins told Discovery News.

Collins' claim is expected to cause a stir in the Egyptological world.

Zahi Hawass, chief of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, has dismissed the discovery.

"There are no new discoveries to be made at Giza. We know everything about the plateau," he stated.

But Collins remarks that after extensive research, he found no mention of the caves in modern times.

"To the best of our knowledge nothing has ever been written or recorded about these caves since Salt's explorations. If Hawass does have any report related to these caves, we have yet to see it," Collins said.

I may add, that the Sphinx originally were a guard-dog before a Pharaoh wanted his face there at the front of the Sphinx.

This is really interesting. I've found many places, while researching, where there are entrances that lead deep inside of the earth. While the hollow earth theory may not be absolutely true, I do believe that there are many enclaves within the earth, where ancient man has explored, and some lived.

Our ancestors were giants, other extraterrestrial beings from Sirius, that were in these enclaves as well. The evidence is their bones that is undeniable. Thanks SiNeh. This is always a topic of interest with me. I'd dearly love to explore these.

Hi Sineh,
I think the original guard of the Sphynx was a lion, not a dog, supposedly
protecting the entrance to the underworld/ hollow earth.
I am interested to know where these tunnels lead to as it seems to be
one of the entrances to the hollow earth in theory. Other theories make this
a prime magnetism spot where the waters meet, therefore allowing more power
to the pyramids. I read another article that says there is an ancient ship buried below the pyramids as well. If there are new species of spiders found, then why not
human/animal species as well.
Makes one ponder???
They did like their secrets which are still being kept today and the denial is still going on it appears.
Thanks for sharing!

I as well, got this explanation from another site;
THE MYSTERY: "I know it will surprise you, but the sphinx actually unlocks the mystery of the zodiac. It is fascinating to note that in the Temple of Esneh in Egypt, there is a great sky painting in the portico on the ceiling which shows the whole picture of the zodiac with all of its constellations. Between the figures of Virgo, The Virgin, and Leo, The Lion, there is carved the figure of the sphinx with the head of a woman and the body of a lion. The woman's face is looking at The Virgin and the lion's tail is pointing to Leo, telling us that we begin with The Virgin and end with Leo." (D. James Kennedy) (872:19)

The zodiac at the Temple of Esneh was patterned after the most famous ancient Zodiac of Denderah in the Temple of Hathor. In Egyptian mythology, Hathor was the daughter of Nut and Ra, the wife of Ra called the 'Eye of Ra,' and mother of Horus the Elder. It seems the Egyptians anticipated that future generations would not be able to understand the zodiac without some help. So they built the Sphinx, which had the head of a woman and the body of a lion, to signify that the zodiac begins with the sign of Virgo and ends in Leo. Jim Cornwell, another astrologer in sheep's clothing, explains:

"And so the Sphinx was invented as a memorial guide to the heavens. It had the head of a woman and the body and tail of a lion, to tell us where to start and stop. The word 'Sphinx' is from the Greek 'sphingo,' to join—because it binds together the story's two ends, making this circle of the heavens.

"Confirmation of this is found in one of the oldest zodiacs, dating back to approximately the year 2000 B.C. This is the zodiac of Dendereh. It was discovered by scholars in the ceiling of the portico of the temple of Esneh in Egypt. In this zodiac there is placed between the signs of Virgo and Leo a picture of the Sphinx."

"That, then, solves the 'riddle' of the Sphinx."

This cannot be the full anwser, yet it does have interesting links to bible verse which states, comes in like a lamb and then roars like a lion. Apocolyptic! The lamb I guess being the virgin the lion being LEO as another reference? The end of an age and beginning of another. Could this be a bible verse attributed to the sphynx?

It was a guard dog looks a little like the DOBERMAN. I the nexus magazines ae very good articles about that.

Well there are other interesting things happen. EGYPT build since long ago a big wall around the whole plateau of Giza. The want to hide some very interesting things, but say for protecting it. LOL

Well, I know much about that "issue", but my time for share all is to short. I am happy to see that many of you add your opinions and say thank you very much for that.
