Spare parts body for live 100 years
Scientific work in the design of "parts" to help us live 100 years with the body we had 50.
Live 100 years with a 50 person's body is becoming more real, say scientists.
That is the aim of a new research programme launched in the United Kingdom seeking solutions to achieve "50 years active after age 50".
Experts from the University of Leeds will receive $ 80 million over five years to focus on the development of biomedical to allow humans to keep active engineering solutions and with a good quality of life up to 100 years.
The program - coordinated by the Institute of medical engineering and biological University-includes regeneration of heart valves, creation of "patches" to repair veins, new ligaments and cartilage, skin "spare" replacement joints and hips in materials that do not wear.
These are the initial objectives, but eventually researchers believe that all parts of the body which deteriorate with age could be replaced.
Longevity of quality thanks to the improvement in standards of living, the majority of babies born today could live 100 years said recently in a study.
But just as scientists, although longevity continue to increase our body continues eroding with age, which reduces the quality of life and the ability of a person to contribute to society.
Leeds researchers try to concentrate on the areas most affected by the passage of time, as joints, spine, dicentes, heart and circulation.
The Institute already managed to develop a transplant hip that can last a lifetime and not 20 years maximum expected with current artificial hips.
According to Professor John Fisher, who runs the program of Leeds, one-piece cobalto-cromo alloy and a ball or "head" ceramic combination has made a joint can easily support 100 million of steps that a person from 50 years given 100 years.
Meanwhile, the teacher Eileen Ingham, who also participates in research, developed a method that allows the body to "improve" itself.
The concept, he says, is to create tissues for transplantation and eventually bodies, which the body recognized as yours, thus overcoming the problem of rejection.
With this technique the researcher has until now to create fully functional heart valves.
The process is to take heart from a donor - valve either human or animal- and withdraw gradually all their cells using a cocktail of enzymes and detergents.
Then the inert structure is transplanted in patient where the body regenerates it cells.
This will avoid the possibility of a refusal, the main cause of wear and failure of normal transplants from occurring.
Proof of concept testing in animals and in 40 patients in Brazil, says Professor Ingham, they have shown promising results.
Researchers granted the license technology national transplant services and blood of the national service for UK health for use in any human tissue donated in this country.
We plan to use the method in skin donated for patients suffering from burns.
The Professor Cristina Doyle of Xeno Medical, medical company that is developing technology, says that the "Holy Grail" of science is to stop depend both on organ donation.
"There is where this technology will lead eventually" said the expert.
But adds that "replace all tissues donated by using this method we take 30 to 50 years." "Each product you will need to be designed and tested individually".
The scientist says that experts in other parts of the world are working on similar regenerative therapies but whose tissues grow out of the body.
All this said, to ensure that people can continue remain active during the second half a century of life of the same way as it was in the first half a century.
